Architectural Design Process
The right architectural designer can make those dreams a reality. I work closely with my clients, to help you with your vision, to make the most of the space you have to work with. Good design takes into account a variety of aspects and I draw on many years of experience in order to achieve the best results. Working with site constraints, dealing with planning and heritage departments, and guiding you through the process is what I do on a day-to-day basis here at Let’s Design Architecture.
So where do we start?
Choosing a Architectural Designer
Meet with one or two architectural design professionals. They need to get on board with your ideas, you can usually get an idea from that initial conversation if you’ve found someone who understands what you want to achieve. If you’re not clear on details at this stage it doesn’t matter, you might want a bigger kitchen but need help working out the best layout – we are here to listen and work with you.
If you have an existing property to work with, you will need it measured up accurately. It is important to get the dimensions right, especially when working with tight spaces and close to boundaries. Also, planning departments will need to see both existing and proposed drawings, as well as site plans.
Make the most of your new space. For a good design to work, it needs to be aesthetically pleasing, functional, and comply with building regulations. It’s not always as simple as it sounds, so it’s best to employ a professional. Using our CAD software we can illustrate how the design works, help you to understand the concept, and involve you in the process, making changes as we go.
Architectural design in the planning process
Most architectural designers will guide you through the planning process. We are here to make the application on your behalf; we know what information the local planning officers are looking for and we liaise with them on a regular basis. Usually the planning application is an 8 week process from submission to determination (depending on the type of application). We can also help you deal with any planning conditions, listed building applications or advice on retrospective planning applications and appeals.
All works in the UK must comply with current Building Regulations. As I’m sure you can imagine, there are a lot of rules! Building regulations include things such as structure, fire safety, drainage, heat loss, sound, electrical safety, access, etc. Most good designers will take these into account at the design stage, to ensure that your design works before working up to more detailed drawings. Building regulations plans will then be checked by Building Control to ensure compliance, at which point you can look to choose a builder to carry out your project. Your builders can quote from our drawings and give you a detailed breakdown of costs.
